Today’s Marching Order, OR, A Thorn for Thursday: “THE DARKNESS OF THE DOCTOR”

Yeah, yeah, yeah, David Tennant could have charmed the hide off a rhino, but I wish Christopher Eccleston had stuck around just a little longer. And I think this fantastic kick ass remix of the original Ron Grainer (and Delia Derbyshire) Who Theme by some lad calling himself King kinda sorta captures the gravitas and intensity of Eccleston, as he was not a Time Lord to be fucked with. Fist clenching optional, but will not be frowned upon. Enjoy.

Darkness of the Doctor

(I guess I should thank WE and Mike Cane for this, but I won’t.)

I’m In Love With PANDORA

Pandora (detail) © Barry Windsor Smith

YES, the service is ten years old. Yes, there are commercials and pop-ups galore. But as a service and business model, it’s pretty damn solid in my opinion. It took ten years for PANDORA to turn a profit because they actually pay royalties to the artists listeners enjoy, and PANDORA’S not in league exclusively with Satan amazon, buyers have a choice where to spend their 99 cents. I might be late to the party, but I’m loving it.

YET ANOTHER MIX (AND 8TRACKS LOVE BABBLE)

This is a mix I made for my sister, who turned blank-blank last week. I made it before the REVENGE mix, actually, and should have blabbed about it before REVENGE, but on Friday I was high on REVENGE for my own goofy reasons… And it felt great, actually! Hadn’t listened to Fear for ages. Highly recommended. Better than a puppy. Forget all about that “happiness and warm gun” stuff. REVENGE! Anyway, this is a “new” mix, and it’s very nice. It’s called

She’s On Drums

A few words about 8Tracks. It’s great. It has it all over last.fm, it can handle multiple tasks while maintaining a high quality stream, unlike last.fm, which craps out if you breathe on it and sounds, well, like crap under the best of circumstances. And as a music sharing platform (and slash) social network, 8Tracks kicks ass. Most of the mixers maintain their own blogs (lots of tumblr and flickr accounts), and all too often I’ve been blown away by a single track by a previously undiscovered band, and with a little exploration, boom. Lotta cool shit out there. Lotta crap, too, but what do you expect? It’s not like I’m spilling the beans on Santa Clause or some- thing.

The only downside to 8Tracks is the purchase option: it’s easy, yes, but if you want to buy a track you decide you can’t live without, you are limited to buying it from, um, amazon. Ah well… Jesus, nothing’s perfect. And you don’t have to buy anything. And you can listen any mix as many times as you want. Check it out.

OK, lovefest over. Tomorrow night… we get serious.

DODGEM LOGIC: NATION OF SAINTS (19 Tracks, All Free for Download, No Shit)

That mad, beautiful, glorious (leathery) fuck Alan Moore has loaded up the compilation CD that came with the first issue of his crazy-ass magazine DODGEM LOGIC and all 19 tracks await your sticky click HERE. (The page’s URL is called dodgemlogic.com/steal.) Now, how cool is that? This is my favorite track (which is not necessarily representative of the 18 other tracks; there are rockers and barroom ballads and invitations to tea with curious guests), I like this track because I am a morbid creep melancholy by nature, this is

Finality Jack’s A Brief Candle

And the three variant covers of DODGEM LOGIC’s second issue are pretty easy on the eyes…

Whoo-hoo! Go and get it, straight from the leathery saint; go get yourself some fun and madness at DL’s main cyber-slum.

Song of the Day: “ILLBEGOTTEN” by UNSACRED SEED

I want everyone to pay close attention to the lyrics, because—well, I can’t put it into words. It was not meant for human ears. It is a message for the Martian Overlords The Old Gods the RIM WALKERS. Don’t say you weren’t warned, stupid humans.

A Big Deal: MICHAEL GIRA REFORMING SWANS

SWANS circa 1988, Photo by Wim Van De Hulst

One of my essential bands. Lords of the New York, post-punk, “No-Wave” scene. On Monday, Michael Gira said:

“Hello There,

” I have decided to focus my energy on SWANS once again. I’m reactivating that project. A new album is in the works, and touring will follow in fall of 2010. In order to help raise funds / help defray the considerable costs of recording and promoting the new album, I have made a special CD/DVD limited edition handmade package called  “I Am Not Insane” available exclusively at the YGR website. You can read about the CD/DVD, and my decision to reactivate SWANS at this link:

YOUNG GODS

“Thanks Very Much, and God Bless You,

“Michael Gira / Swans / Angels Of Light / Young God Records”

(And, oh yeah—Drax stuff coming soon. Really.)

EXIT VECTOR Music

EXIT VECTOR, oh Most Definitely…

THIS TUNE MAKES THE GRADE for inclusion in the official EV soundtrack, oh yes. “I lived My Life to Stand in the Shadow of Your Heart” by A Place to Bury Strangers. From their recent album, EXPLODING HEAD.

It’s appropriate thunder as I storm the barbed-wire and barricades of the Final Installment (currently titled “et in Terra Pax,” how seriously preten-tious but I don’t care), the slow-burn rev and power-UP of the guitar, the Morrisey/Ian Curtis half-awake lament of the vocals, and the subterranean crunch that evokes so many beloved bands of my “youth”: My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, The Jesus and Mary Chain, others. Check it out, and play it, you know…

Explore more of the awesomeness of A Place to Bury Strangers.

And when all this nonsense is finished, I’ll post about all the crazy tunage I listened to while writing this damn story.

The End is coming.
